Hello 2015! As an Author and Publisher, I can’t help but
wonder what 2015 will bring. We will all most certainly go on many adventures
when it comes to publishing our cherished manuscripts. But the things I think that will come to pass
this year are:
Amazon has found a way to pay authors less. With Kindle
Unlimited, it is basically giving away your hard work for free. I have only
come across a handful of authors that are satisfied with the program. I see it
as a way for Kindle to earn more money, but pay the authors less. And punish
the authors that don’t jump on the band wagon. My publishing company hasn’t and
will not take part in KDP exclusive, or Kindle Unlimited.
Now I get a lot of questions regarding why we won’t at least
take part in KDP exclusive, and the answer is simple. Nevermore Press, and
Raven’s Seduction Press choose to put our books in as many avenues as possible.
This helps the authors earn more. It
also gives the authors a shot at the coveted top lists (you can’t make the NYT,
or USA Today with only KDP, must be multiple outlets). We feel it’s a
disservice to not put them in every outlet available.
I hate to say it, but I think 2015 will be amazing for those
of us that stick in there. But with the influx of authors publishing their own
work comes the inevitability of those who can’t hang in there and disappear from
the publishing community. Remember only 10% of people who want to write
actually write. And out of that, only 10% of those publish, or are published. But
that being said remember not everyone can take criticism. Some will simply just
fade away, and give up on a dream so many of us have fought to keep.
Now we all know authors come from all walks in life. Some,
and most actually just write as a hobby. But those that stick around should see
an increase in sales soon. J
